The Winds of Ch’i — Obeying the Speed Limits
Ch’i, vitality or life force, and loosely translated by westerners, as energy, are words used throughout feng shui books. In feng shui ch’i is expressed or interpreted through the ambiance of a room or space. More succinctly, we experience ch’i through our five senses. We see and respond to color, shape, form, and pathways. We experience ch’i through aromas, both pleasant and not so pleasant; through touch, smooth, textured, painful, hot or cold. We experience ch’i through taste—sweet, sour, dry, spoiled, and, through sound—loud, soft, obnoxious and so on. As we interact with our surroundings the role that ch’i plays deeply influences our feelings. Many things such as the color of the wall, the pattern on a fabric, the density of the furniture and the pathway through the room all dictate the vitality of a space. And the level of that vitality is what dictates how we respond. Just like the speed limit and exit signs on the highway provide us cues on how fast we should travel or when to change course, so does the ch’i expressed by the elements in a room dictate how we respond in a space.
Constantly in motion, the ch’i of nature follows cyclic patterns that reveal the process of transformation. Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching affect our vitality, which is directly connected to our moods. Adjusting the amount of stimulation each of our senses experiences transforms those moods accordingly. The following table is designed to help identify elements you can add or subtract to engage the senses for experiencing the ch’i in your space.
